San Francisco Bay Ferry serves communities throughout the Bay Area with ferry terminals in the cities of San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, South San Francisco and Vallejo. Our vessel network provides a unique transit option to destinations such as San Francisco's AT&T Park, the San Francisco Ferry Building, San Francisco's Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf area, Harbor Bay, Alameda Main Street, Oakland's Jack London Square, South San Francisco/Oyster Point, and the City of Vallejo (with connecting bus service to the Napa Valley Wine Train). In San Francisco, riders can also connect with ferry service to Marin county (on the Golden Gate Ferry) and to Angel Island State Park (on a Blue & Gold Fleet boat).
Will my ferry be on time?
Barring unforeseen circumstances, you can expect your San Francisco Bay Ferry to depart on schedule. Do note that all arrival times are estimates. Our BayAlerts notification system provides San Francisco Bay Ferry riders with important, timely and customized ferry service information via email, text, voice or TTY on those occasions that we are experiencing a delay. Do you have a lost & found?
If you have left an item onboard a Vallejo ferry, call (707) 64-FERRY for assistance. For Alameda, Oakland, Harbor Bay, San Francisco and South San Francisco lost & found items, call Blue & Gold Fleet at (415) 705-8205. Please be sure to bring your belongings with you when you offboard. San Francisco Bay Ferry is not responsible for misplaced items.
Do you operate on holidays?
San Francisco Bay Ferry does not run on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. Schedules for other holidays vary by service. Please visit our holiday page for more information.
How long is the trip?
Transit times vary from route to route. The shortest trips are the "shorthop" between Alameda and Oakland (10 minutes) and the commute service between Alameda Main Street and the San Francisco Ferry Building (19 minutes). The longest trip is between the Ferry Building and the City of Vallejo (60 minutes). Please check schedules for transit times for your trip.
What boats do you use?
The San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet consists of 12 boats all of which are catamarans (i.e., have two hulls). Vessel speed varies but ranges from 25 knots (28.7 miles per hour) to 35 knots (40 miles per hour). All boats are owned and maintained by the ferry service on behalf of the public.
How do I get to Angel Island State Park by ferry?
Take San Francisco Bay Ferry from Alameda, Oakland or Vallejo to Pier 41 ot the San Francisco Ferry Building and complete your journey with Blue & Gold Fleet. You will need to buy an Angel Island ticket separately as San Francisco Bay Ferry does not offer direct service to Angel Island. Angel Island tickets and schedules.
Do I need reservations?
Reservations are only available for the special AT&T Park Service operating between Vallejo, Alameda Main Street, Oakland, and AT&T Park. What if I have an emergency and need to get home from work?
Ferry riders who experience a workday illness, family crisis or other unscheduled emergency may be eligible for a free ride home from work via taxi, rental car or other transit options provided by Guaranteed Ride Home programs offered by San Mateo and Alameda Counties to employees working in those counties. Is Clipper accepted on the ferry?
Clipper Cards can currently be used on all SFBF services (with the exception of seasonal services to AT&T Park). Clipper is an easy-to-use fare payment card which can be used on many Bay Area transit systems. Learn how to use Clipper on San Francisco Bay Ferry.
Are commuter checks accepted?
Yes. CommuterChecks are welcome.
Are the ferries accessible to person with disabilities?
Disabled individuals are welcome on the SF Bay Ferry. All vessels offer a wheelchair accessible restroom and our friendly deck hands are happy to provide infiormation and provide boarding assistance.
Are pets or service animals allowed?
Customers may transport small pets on San Francisco Bay Ferry boats in a completely enclosed cage or carrying case that is small enough to fit on the customer’s lap. The animal must not endanger or annoy other customers. Pets are allowed on boats with the following conditions:
- The pet must be in a carrier or portable kennel – Not on a leash or in a lap.
- The pet is non-disruptive (no barking, growling, constant whimpering, etc.) Should the pet become disruptive during the voyage the crew shall direct the pet owner to move the pet to the utility room for the remainder of the voyage.
SERVICE ANIMALS: Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), businesses and organizations that serve the public must allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals into all areas of the facility where customers are normally allowed to go. Service animals and service animals in training are also permitted to ride on board San Francisco Bay Ferry boats.
Service animals are animals that are individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities – such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling wheelchairs, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, or performing other special tasks. Service animals are working animals, not pets. “Comfort animals” are considered pets.
Employees may ask if the animal is required because of a disability and what work or task has the animal been trained to perform but cannot require special ID cards for the animal or ask about the person’s disability.
People with disabilities who use service animals cannot be charged extra fees, isolated from other patrons, or treated less favorably than other patrons. A person with a disability cannot be asked to remove his service animal from the premises unless: (a) The animal is out of control and the animal’s owner does not take effective action to control it. (b) The animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
Is there overnight parking available?
No overnight parking is permitted at the Harbor Bay, South San Francisco, Alameda Main Street, or Oakland terminals. Overnight parking is available at the Vallejo Ferry Terminal. Parking in public parking lots is at your own risk.
Can I bring a gasoline powered bike on the Ferry?/Are bicycles allowed on board?
Bikes are allowed and welcome but U.S. Coast Guard regulations prohibit gasoline powered vehicles onboard the boat.
What transit systems connect with the ferry?
Connecting public transit service varies from ferry terminal to ferry terminal. Please consult the specific ferry terminal map (provided on this website) if you are interested in connecting transit information.
May law enforcement ride SFBF free of charge?
Yes, active duty law enforcement officers may ride the SFBFD free under the following conditions:
- Must have a badge (badge/ID must be shown to crew member at the time of boarding).
- Must have a weapon (verbal confirmation to crew member is sufficient--you do not need to show the weapon).
- Must be available and willing to assist in a law enforcement capacity should the need arise (this must be confirmed by a crew member at the time of boarding).
- A uniform is not required.
- Also, please note that boarding San Francisco Bay Ferry is always first come, first served.
How far is Pier 41 from Pier 39? From Fisherman's Wharf?
Pier 41 is approximately 1 city block from the Pier 39 Entertainment complex. Pier 41 is three blocks from Fisherman's Wharf.
How do Alameda County's Measure B/BB funds support the Ferry Service?
Over the last 16 years, the citizens of Alameda County have supported ferry service through the Alameda County half-cent transportation sales tax known as Measure B. Approved by Alameda County voters in 2000, Measure B was designed to fund essential transportation improvements and services and was expected to generate more than $1.4 billion in county transportation funds over its 20 years life span. In 2014, Alameda County voters approved Measure BB, authorizing an extension and augmentation of Measure B with the expectation that Measure BB would generate approximately $8 billion in revenues from April 2015 to March 2045 for transportation improvements for Alameda County.
The Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) uses Measure B/BB funds to support the Alameda/Oakland, Harbor Bay, and East Bay/South San Francisco ferry services. In FY 2015/16, WETA will use $2.409 million in sales tax revenue to pay for Alameda Main Street ferry terminal access improvements, and to support purchase of a replacement for the M.V. Express II and the M.V. Taurus engine overhaul.
The $250,000 Alameda Main Street access improvement project is a good example of a critical project fully funded by MB/BB. The joint WETA/City of Alameda project will make the old Officer’s Club parking lot across Main Street from the ferry terminal available for overflow ferry parking. The project includes lot repaving, installation of lighting, and construction of a new cross walk enabling riders to safely cross Main Street. The project is expected to be completed by June 1.
