Open for Operations
At precisely 1:55 pm on Friday, April 29th, the Water Emergency Transportation Authority's role as a ferry service provider began.
The legislation creating WETA required that the organization consolidate existing publicly operated ferry services with the exception of services operated by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. The Alameda/Oakland and Alameda Harbor Bay ferry services are the first to transfer to WETA under this mandate.
Passengers will not see any day to day changes in operations. Ferries will continue to make the same departures from Oakland's Jack London Square, Alameda's Main Street and Harbor Bay terminals, and the San Francisco Ferry Terminal.
Alameda/Oakland ferry service began operating in 1989. Currently operated under contract by Blue & Gold Fleet, the service has thirteen departures from Alameda/Oakland and twelve from the San Francisco Ferry Building and provides five departures from Pier 41 and special service to AT&T Park and Angel Island. This year there will be direct service to Cal Games at AT&T Park. There is weekend service that includes nine round-trips during the summer. Alameda/Oakland accounts for almost 500,000 annual passenger trips.
Harbor Bay ferry service is a commuter only service providing three AM and four PM trips. It began operating in 1992 and today carries about 150,000 annual passenger trips. The Alameda Harbor Bay ferry is currently operated under contract by Harbor Bay Maritime.
The WETA Board of Directors wishes to thank the City of Alameda and the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority for partnering on the successful transition of ferry services.
Transition of the City of Vallejo's Baylink ferry service to WETA is currently in motion. In April the Vallejo City Council approved the basic terms for the transition of the Baylink ferry service from the City of Vallejo to WETA. Baylink services are expected to transition to WETA later this year. WETA looks forward to providing ferry service to the City of Vallejo. Additionally, plans are currently underway for our first new ferry route, serving commuters between the East Bay and South San Francisco.
Welcome Aboard!
